More About Me

Sinchai Tsao PhD is currently the Principal Consultant at Sinch Consulting LLC . His expertise is in the intersection of machine learning and image analysis / computer vision to solve real world problems.

Sinchai did his postdoctoral training (2014-2015) as a Senior Fellow in Neonatology, Department of Pediatrics at University of Washington‘s Biomedical Image Computing Group [PI: Colin Studholme, PhD]. His current work is focused on Cortical Surface Reconstructions of Neonates from MRI images to study human development. The basic idea is to use computational tools to reconstruct a topologically correct (sphere homologous) cerebral cortex that can be used to study cortical topology. The penultimate goal is to use topological measures of the reconstructed 3D cortical surface (surface area, curvature, etc) to elucidate the precise timing and features of changes during human development. His work was funded by National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) grant 5R01NS061957-06 [PI: Colin Studholme, PhD].

Sinchai did his doctoral research at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Specifically, the development of Diffusion Weighted Imaging techniques in measuring white matter integrity. He was interested in how to integrate novel imaging features, such as those from Diffusion MRI, with clinical information in large-scale imaging studies. He was part of CIBORG / LeporĂ© GroupChildren’s Hospital Los Angeles, USC’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC) imaging core as well as USC’s Biomedical Imaging Laboratory (PI: Manbir Singh, PhD). His work has been previously supported by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) grant 5R21EB013456-02 [PI: Manbir Singh, PhD -> Meng Law, MD] as well as National Institute on Aging (NIA) grants 5P01AG012435-18 [PI: Helena Chui, MD] and 1R01AG042127-01A1 [PI: Ihab Hajjar MD].

During his time in Los Angeles, he also served as Director of Engineering Curriculum at Iridescent Learning a 501c3 non-profit organization seeking to further access STEM education to children in the inner cities. During his time with Iridescent, he worked on curriculum development as well as help launched their site in New York.

Sinchai received his AB in International Relations and ScB in Biophysics from Brown University and his MSBME, MSEE & PhD from the Viterbi School of Engineering at University of Southern California.
